Upcycling, also known as creative reuse, is the process of transforming by-products, waste materials, useless, or unwanted products into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value. Upcycling is the opposite of downcycling, which is the other face of the recycling process.

Vinnies Re-sew takes any clothing and textiles that cannot be sold and turns them into new products that are resold or used for other community projects. While reducing textile waste they are also creating social and economic opportunities through a work experience program that supports upskilling, education and integration of people in need.

Sew-Good is a sewing co-operative that re-purposes textile waste through community sewing, waste-free living sewing classes and commercial sewing sessions. The group operates out of The Remakery in Lower Hutt and works with many other community groups in the area. Their products can be found in our store or online. You can also go and visit and take one of their classes.

The Formary are a Wellington-based consultancy and development group that focus on the transformation of surplus fibres into fabrics. They work with businesses and organisations worldwide to create designer textiles that are better for the planet. With special projects like Textile Reuse, they are “transitioning organisations to a circular system able to capture the full value of clothing during and after use”.

PolyPalace diverts polystyrene from landfill and with their unique recycling process create new products like insulation and building materials. They put a value on something that is a throw away plastic product and make it into practical items. You can take your polystyrene to be recycled by appointment and can purchase their products online.

Sew Love is a social enterprise providing pop-up fun spaces and resources for people to be creative, learn new skills, and get to know their neighbours. We focus on reducing landfill and strengthening communities in a fun positive way. Sarah and her van Cecil travel all around NZ taking the fun of creative sustainability on the road, popping up at recycle centre's, op shops, farmers markets and campgrounds to get kiwis mending and making and appreciating our beautiful slice of Mother Earth.

ReBicycle is a charitable community organisation which ‘upcycles’ donated second-hand bikes into safe, practical commuter bikes to gift or loan to people who need them, starting with newly settled refugees in the Wellington region but also including any people experiencing financial difficulty. It’s a community-led initiative that gives back to the community, preventing useful resources ending up in the landfill, reducing transport carbon emissions and enabling free healthy transport options.
